Flow Test Correlation of Size and Flow

Customer Challenge to Accu-Glass:

A customer needs a flow restrictor but only knows what liquid flow rate is needed and what pressure they will be using. Accu-Glass will develop custom Microbore glass flow restrictors with an inside diameter (ID) determined to meet the customer fluid flow requirements.

Introduction/Background:

Glass Microbore Tubing provides precise and constant flow rate delivery, which make ideal flow restrictors. Air flow testing is a quick and accurate way to measure the ID verses a liquid test. Accu-Glass is capable of delivering tight precision (+/-0.001”) for the glass ID using a low cost short run conventional glass drawing process.

Solution:

Using the customer provided liquid flow rate and pressure, a standard product length is agreed upon. With these specifications, Accu-Glass will calculate the theoretical ID that is needed to obtain the desired liquid flow. Using this ID and length, a target nominal air flow value is calculated in SCCM’s.

The ID is measured to this nominal flow using the Pressure Decay flow testing method during the glass drawing process.  All of the parts are then cut and sent through our automated flow testing equipment where the final finished product is 100% verified to ensure compliance with the customer’s fluid flow specification.

After the 100% flow-test, the parts are packaged and shipped to the customer for verification against their liquid flow test. After the customer performs their liquid test, we can then determine if we need to make any adjustments to the ID and nominal flow. Most times this can be done on the first run, but can take two or three runs to get the proper correlation between liquid flow and air flow.

What Are Glass Micro Bore Flow Restrictors ?   Glass Precision Micro Bore Tubing provides precise and constant flow rate delivery, which make ideal flow restrictors. Custom Micro Bore glass tubing flow restrictors are made to your exacting size, inside diameter (ID) or outside diameter (OD) tolerance, concentricity or roundness specifications. Precision multi-hole or multi-bore capillaries, specialty shapes, or added colors are available. After cutting, the glass flow restrictors can be tumbled with ceramic media to remove the sharp edges. This is preferred when the Micro Bore glass flow restrictor is inserted into a plastic housing as a sharp glass edge can skive the plastic. Accu-Glass can also 100% flow test the restrictors in automatic test equipment. Finally, the parts are thoroughly cleaned and dried. They can be packaged in bulk with plastic-lined shippers or shrink packaged to prevent the part from movement during shipment. Cut to Length and 100% Flow Test of Microbore

Customer Challenge to Accu-Glass: Due to the variation in sizes of the ID for the flow restrictors, many customers buy their tubing in long lengths and cut each piece to varying lengths to obtain the exact fluid flow for their requirements.

Introduction/Background: Glass Microbore Tubing provides precise and constant flow rate delivery, which make ideal flow restrictors.

Solution: Accu-Glass will develop custom Microbore glass flow restrictors with an inside diameter (ID) determined to meet the customer fluid flow requirements.

Outside diameter (OD), concentricity and/or roundness specifications will meet the exact customer requirements compatible with the microbore’s end use.

Accu-Glass is capable of delivering tight precision (+/-0.001”) for the glass ID using a low cost short run conventional glass drawing process. The ID is measured using the Pressure Decay flow testing method to obtain this precision during the glass drawing process.

Due to the precision of the ID, the length of the customer’s part is set to a fixed dimension. All of the parts are cut to this fixed length.

The parts are then thoroughly cleaned and dried.

After this the parts are sent through our automated flow testing equipment where the final finished product is 100% verified to ensure compliance with the customer’s fluid flow specification.

After the 100% flow-test, the parts are packaged and shipped to the customer.

They can be packaged in bulk with plastic-lined shippers or shrink packaged to prevent the part from movement during shipment.

Conclusion: Accu-Glass Engineers design and develop precision glass microbore solutions for a set flow at a fixed length. This eliminates the need for secondary cutting processes, extra sorting, and additional labor required at your facility.

Glass Encapsulation of Small Metal Rods

Customer Challenge to Accu-Glass:

For small metal rods and other small components, the exact size of glass to enclose them is normally not available from available standard glass sizes.  Plastic materials are not available in tight tolerances to fit components and plastic molds can be very expensive for prototype work.

 

Introduction/Background:

Small metal rods 0.001” to 0.25” in outer diameter sometimes need protection when placed in certain environments.  Glass encapsulation of the small metal rods provides the necessary protection for the rod or other small devices and can withstand the harsh surroundings. Glass is inert, will not attack or out gas into what is encapsulated and can provide a hermetic seal.

 

Solution:

Accu-Glass can tailor the inside dimension of the glass to provide the fit required by our customers.  One end can be sealed to allow the customer to load the metal rod or small component into the glass envelop and seal the opposite end themselves.  Accu-Glass can provide a total glass encapsulation of a customer’s part by producing the glass to their specific requirements, sealing one end of the glass , loading the small article and sealing the opposite end. The end sealing can be achieved through flame sealing, laser sealing, a sealant or a stopper.  One customer commented that Accu-Glass was able to provide the prototype samples  very quickly of an encapsulated sinter metal rod that they needed for their R&D work.

 

Conclusion:

Accu-Glass can provide tight precision (+/-0.0001”) for the glass inside dimension with a low cost short run conventional drawing process or an even tighter precision using a glass redraw process.  The specialty glass will fit the unique design of a customer’s small component and provide a hermetically sealed encapsulation to protect it from harsh environments.  As a designer or purchaser of small glass components, Accu-Glass can meet your needs and work with you from prototyping through full high volume production phases of product development.
